KARACHI, May 27: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro on Monday promulgated an ordinance providing for establishment of a Defence Housing Authority Suffa University in Karachi.

The ordinance shall come into force at once. The university shall be a corporate body and the governor of Sindh will be its patron and preside over the convocation. The president of the executive board of the Defence Housing Authority shall be the chancellor.

Subject to the instructions prescribed by the government from time to time, the university shall have the powers to provide for instruction and training in branches of learning and to make for research, demonstration and for advancement and dissemination of knowledge.

The university may affiliate and disaffiliate only those educational institutions which are financed and run by the authority. It may also associate and collaborate with other institutions and universities, the ordinance says.

The ordinance provides that the university may confer honorary degrees on persons as approved by the patron.—PPI
