KARACHI, Dec 1: Treatment of several injuries of gunshot, face, head, throat cancer, trauma of soft and hard tissues and cheek bones has now become more sophisticated and safer after the induction of a new kit.

This was stated by the head of the maxillofacial and dentistry department of the Liaquat National Hospital, Dr Jahanzaib Mughal, while speaking at a symposium on "restorative dentistry" at the LNH.

The contemporary synthesis platting kit has been installed at the LNH at a cost of Rs4 million, he said, and added that now patients can be discharged within 24 hours of operation as compared to earlier 10-15 days' stay in the hospital.

This operation is jointly conducted by the maxillofacial, ENT and plastic surgeons. Earlier, the patients had to undergo a torturous situation in which their jaws used to be closed so that they could not move and they were kept in intensive care unit as well as on respiratory machines.

Dr Jahanzaib said last month 23 patients were treated at LNH and of them 70 per cent were treated through the latest platting system. Talking about the implant, he said that the latest machines have been procured from Germany and Switzerland and are much better than the similar implants.

Dr Dev Patel of Royal College of Surgeons England and Dr Sandeep Popat of Johan Radcliff Hospital Oxford also spoke on latest treatment of dentistry in the West and guidelines to the postgraduate students. -APP
