CHENNAI, Oct 12: Australia's Shane Warne, poised to become the world's highest Test wicket-taker, said on Tuesday he would prefer to achieve the feat before his adoring home fans.

However, the leg-spinner, who will start the second Test on Thursday two shy of Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's 532 scalps, said a long-awaited series victory in India would more than make amends.

"To break the world record, not in Australia but here would probably be my second choice," he said. "I'd like to think I'll do it in this Test match. If I don't I'd probably be carrying drinks in the next one," he joked.

Australia, chasing their first series victory in India since 1969, are 1-0 up in the four-match series after their 217-run victory in the first Test in Bangalore. "Obviously it will be a huge achievement to get the world record and do it in India, where cricket is a number one passion," he told reporters.

"The support you get from the Indian public is fantastic. But the most important thing is to win the series. "I've been playing 14-15 years now and we have won everywhere. This is the only place we have never won.

"It will be nice to finish your career off and say 'look, you won everywhere home and away to every country'. "It will be quite a nice achievement by this group of guys." The 35-year-old said his role against India, whose players are generally good players of spin, is a bit different.

"Generally the fast bowlers are going to worry the Indian batsmen more than spinners and I play more of a support role," said Warne, who failed to get the record in Bangalore despite a long bowl against the tail-enders on a fifth-day pitch. "I tried too much, got a bit impatient and I got slogged around a bit," he added. -Reuters
