HYDERABAD, Oct 12: The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) observed black dayacross Sindh on Tuesday to observe fifth anniversary of overthrow of the elected government of Nawaz Sharif by the army generals.
Rallies were held and processions were taken out by the PML-N activists of the in almost all district headquarters of the province. Speakers at the rallies severely criticized the army general for assuming power after toppling down the PML-N government which enjoyed two-third majority in the parliament.
The Hyderabad District Bar Association also observed black day, the lawyers wore black arm-bands, hoisted a black flag atop the office of the bar association and held a meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, acting president of the bar association Abdul Khaliq Leghari and others demanded that President Gen Pervez Musharraf quit power, 17th constitutional amendment be repealed and Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Asif Ali Zardari and Yousuf Raza Gilani be released.
On the other hand, the Awami Himayat Tehrik Pakistan celebrated the fifth anniversary of President Musharraf's assuming power by cutting a five pound cake at the local press club. The Tehrik leaders also held a press conference and rejected the opposition to the president.
Activists of the PML-N, led by former MNA Sahibzada Shabbir Hassan Ansari and Hanif Siddiqui, held two protest demonstrations outside the press club. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ansari said that October 12 was the darkest day in the history of Pakistan and demanded that Mr Sharif and his family as well as Benazir Bhutto be allowed to return to Pakistan "to save the country from disintegration."
Siddiq Nawaz Masih said that those who had accused Mr Sharif of hijacking an aeroplane had hijacked the parliament and the judiciary. Activists of the Muslim Students Federation, led by its provincial president Roshan Ali Baloch and Rafique Lodhi, observed a token hunger strike. A meeting was held at the residence of Sultan Shaikh, city vice-president of the PML-N, where speakers said that generals had no right to rule the country
DADU: The PML-N observed black day in the district, its workers took out a procession in Dadu city and observed a token hunger strike outside the local press club. Speakers on the occasion rejected army's interference in politics and the projects of the Kalabagh dam and Greater Thal canal.
NAWABSHAH: Activists of the PML-N, led by its district president Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, observed black day, took out a procession and held a protest demonstration outside the press club.
The procession emerged from the PML-N office and culminated at the press club where workers held a demonstration. Speaking to the protesters, the PMl-N local leaders said that only politicians were entitled to run the affairs of the country.
SHIKARPUR: The PML-N observed black day here and its activists, led by its district president Malik Hadi Bux, took out a procession. The party leaders warned that a country wide protest campaign against President Musharraf would be launched if he did not shed his uniform by December 31.
KHAIRPUR: The party held a protest meeting at the Ghous Manzil, where senior vice-president of the PML-N Makhdoom Shahnawaz said that dictatorship had created a number of problems for common man.
He said that after dissolution of the elected government of Mr Sharif, there was one man rule in Pakistan. Afzal Gujjar, joint secretary of the Sindh chapter of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, Zeenat Shaikh, Badshah Shaikh, Mumtaz Rind and others also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, a procession was taken from Therhi to Khairpur city the participants of which raised slogans against the government and demanded safe return of Mr Sharif and Ms Bhutto.
