ISLAMABAD, Oct 12: About 434 government houses, quarters and flats are still under illegal occupation, the Senate standing committee on works, environment and urban affairs was informed on Tuesday.

The meeting held at the Parliament House underlined the need to eject all the illegal occupants. The committee headed by Senator Dr Mohammad Ali Brohi was also informed that 354 cases were pending in various courts.

Out of 80 non sub-judice cases, 31 were under the unauthorized occupation of Islamabad police, whereas 47 flats and quarters have been illegally occupied by the employees of the Islamabad police.

Secretary ministry of housing and works apprised the committee of the various steps to get the quarters and houses vacated. The inspector general of Islamabad police assured the committee that all-out efforts would be made to get the committee's directives implemented. He said show-cause and eviction notices had been issued to such police employees.

The official said low-paid employees of Islamabad police had neither been taken on the pool of the Estate Office nor there were sufficient barracks for them, as a result they had to live at places 15 to 25 kilometres away from the capital.

He suggested that a quota may be fixed for the employees of the police for allotment of houses. Dr Brohi said writ of the government must be established and the illegal occupants be ejected.
