TAX COLLECTORS: A member of the Central Board of Revenue, Mr Shahid Ahmed, has called upon tax auditors and collectors to behave in a courteous manner with taxpayers.

He was speaking at a meeting of traders and industrialists held at the secretariat of the Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Monday. He said the sales tax advisory committee of the Hyderabad Collectorate should hold at least one meeting in a month and monitor the work of 40 auditors of the collectorate.

Mr Ahmed said the CBR had a specific purpose that was to provide all facilities to taxpayers. He assured taxpayers that the excess amount of tax would be refunded to them without any delay.

He gave a detailed briefing to traders about the relevant sections of the sales tax. He said the CBR was considering the deduction of advance tax from contractors and suppliers on the presumptive basis.

Mr Ahmed said that non-exporters would be refunded their dues within six months instead of one year and added the period would be further reduced in the next budget. He said there were 88,000 businessmen who paid the sales tax out of which 4,000 were exporters.

He appealed to the traders and industrialists to motivate the business community to register themselves in the list of taxpayers with a view to streamlining the taxation system.
