SUKKUR, Sept 23: Over 750 rice mills remained closed in Sindh and Balochistan on the second day on Thursday on a strike call of the Sindh Balochistan Rice Mills Association.
The strike is being observed in protest against a lack of interest shown by the government in purchasing 100,000 tonnes of rice worth Rs2 billion. Rice dealers in Sindh and Balochistan also closed their business to express solidarity with the rice millers.
Around 25,000 labourers have been rendered jobless due to the strike of rice mills. On Friday, an important meeting of the rice mills association would be held to discuss further strategy.
KILLED: A man was gunned down by armed men in the clock tower area near the A-section police station on Wednesday. Abdul Fatah, son of Sabbir Khoharo, 26, and his friend, Mohammad Hassan, were on their way to the clock tower when armed men intercepted and tried to hijack motorcycle.
They shot dead Abdul Fatah when he offered resistance. It may be mentioned that the clock tower is the thickly- populated area where police mobiles patrol round the clock. The deceased was said to be a resident of Bakhsho Seelro village, Pano Akil taluka, and a tailor master. Mohammad Hassan, friend of the deceased, registered an FIR (98/2004) under section 17/3, 34 CPC at the A-section police station against unknown bandits.
INJURED: Two people were injured in an armed clash in Ghario Indhar village in the limits of Pano Akil police station on Wednesday.
Armed men of Syed and Indhar groups opened fire on each other over a minor dispute as a result two people were injured and shifted to the Civil Hospital Sukkur. They were identified as Gulzar Indhar and Abdul Waheed Indhar. The Pano Akil police registered a case against members of Syed group.
