KARACHI, Sept 21: A worker of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, who carried Rs3 million reward on his arrest, was indicted on Tuesday by an anti-terrorism court in the murder case of a passer by woman.
Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 fixed Thursday for recording statements of the prosecution witnesses after Kamran alias Asif alias Uncle alias Mehmood denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.
The LJ man was charged with killing a passerby woman and attempting to kill policemen during a shootout with a police party on May 19 this year in Sector 15-A of the Buffer Zone under Sections 302, 353 and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to prosecution, represented by special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum, Inspector Usman Asghar, along with a police party raided house No R-1272, Al-Mubashir Building after receiving information about the presence of the LJ man.
It was alleged that the accused opened fire on the police party to avoid his arrest and he was injured after the police returned the fire. Serwar Bibi, a domestic servant, was killed in the shootout.
The police allegedly caught him red-handed with an unlicensed AK-4 assault rifle (Kalashnikov) and eight hand grenades from the Lashkar activist, who was also charged with the possession of explosive material under Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act.
MURDER CASE: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 put off the hearing of a murder case of a constable after recording the statement of the accused person. The judge, who had earlier sentenced two other accused to death in the same case, fixed Sept 24 for hearing final arguments from the prosecution and defence attorneys.
Syed Amir Hussain alias Fauji, who was arrested on Nov 8, 2003, is being tried for killing Mehboob Ali and injuring two other cops on Jan 13, 2003, in the compound of the Saudabad police station.
The accused denied the charges and stated that police had implicated him in the case. According to prosecution, five suspects were spotted by a Saudabad police party in a stolen car (AAB-588). The police party intercepted them and brought the suspects and their car to the police station.
The accused allegedly hurled a cracker and allegedly snatched a sub-machine gun from a constable and opened fire as smoke and dust engulfed the scene after the explosion. PC Mehboob died instantly and two other policemen were injured by the accused.
MURDER CASE: Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 recorded the statement of a prosecution witness in a kidnapping-cum-murder case. The judge put off the hearing till Wednesday after the deposition of victim's father, Syed Hasan Abbas, who was also the complainant in the case against accused Khurrum Mushtaq and Ather Mehmood.
Victim Raghib Hussain was kidnapped around 11:30am on April 1 this year and he was found unconscious near Singapore Towers in Sharea Faisal police area in the evening. According to the prosecution, the victim was shifted to the Liaquat National Hospital. On April 2, he told his mother that he was kidnapped by his friend, Sheeraz, who posed him as a girl on the internet.
The victim told the family that on March 31 the imposter asked him into going on a date. He stated that he reached the Rado Centre in Gulistan-i-Jauhar in his Suzuki FX car. He said that Sheeraz along with a girl got into his car and they kidnapped him at gunpoint.
The victim said the couple took him to a bungalow in Gulistan-i-Jauhar where accused Khurrum, Asif, and Ather were already present. He stated that accused Asif injected a syringe in his chest as the other accused caught hold of him. He said that after a little while Asif injected another syringe in his chest and he went unconscious.
The victim's mother stated to the police that her brother had seen her son going with a man and a woman in his car. She said around 1:30 pm, the kidnappers phoned her and demanded Rs1 million for the release of her son.
She said that around 8:30am the kidnappers again phoned her to tell that her son was lying near Singapore Tower. According to the charge sheet, the victim died at the hospital on April 16 and his mother informed the Gulistan-i- Jauhar police about the incident.
Later on July 26, sub-inspector Adnan arrested accused Khurrum and Ather. Three other accused, including a young woman, are still absconding and the court issued non-bailable warrants for their arrest.
