KARACHI, Sept 17: Vehicular traffic remained suspended for several hours on main Manghopir Road on Friday as a large number of residents of the nearby water-starved localities staged a demonstration to voice their anger over the persisting water shortage.
The protesters, belonging to Manghopir's Pakhtunabad and adjoining localities, lit bonfires and pelted vehicles with stones and raised slogans against the KWSB for not paying heed to the lingering water issue.
A heavy contingent of rangers and police reached the spot to control the situation. The protesters apprised the Rangers personnel that although their localities are without water for the last one week, the KWSB officials were not taking measures to restore their supply.
The demonstrators, however, dispersed after sometime following assurances given by the rangers and police officials that their matter would be taken up with senior officials of the KWSB.
CONTAMINATION: Almost entire Shah Faisal Colony No 4 is continuously being supplied contaminated water for the last four days, leaving no choice for residents of the affected houses, but to buy private tankers or consume sub-soil unhygienic water.
Residents of the affected area complained that although polluted water is being supplied to them for the last four days, no measures have been taken to remove the problem.
Suspecting that sewage water might be seeping into the pipeline, they demanded of the KWSB MD and chief engineer to direct the officials concerned to immediately remove the causes of filthy water supply.
They feared that some serious abdominal ailment might break out in the affected locality. Complaints of persisting water shortage have been received from Baldia, Orangi Town and Shershah.
