TORONTO, Sept 12: Islamabad's role in combating terrorism and human rights record was highlighted by a Pakistani official at the 8th International Conference of Ombudsmen held in Canada.

"Pakistan is waging a war against terrorism without violating human rights," Yousuf Jamal, the Sindh ombudsman, told delegates during a four-day conference in Qubec city this week.

Organized by Quebec-based International Ombudsman Institute (IOI), the conference was attended by 440 delegates from 77 countries. In his speech at the conference, Mr Jamal said Pakistan was a frontline state in war on terror and was fulfilling its responsibilities of maintaining good human rights record.

He told the delegates that as an ombudsman in Sindh his job was to provide "inexpensive, fast track administrative justice and timely relief to the needy and poor". Later in an interview with Dawn, Mr Jamal said that the IOI conference mainly debated issues concerning human rights. After the conference he came to Toronto for a day's visit before returning to Karachi.
