HYDERABAD, Sept 8: The deputy secretary-general of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Liaquat Baloch, has warned that if President Gen Pervez Musharraf did not doff his uniform by Dec 31, then a 'go Musharraf go' movement will be launched in and outside parliament.
He was speaking at a gathering of 'Halqa Ahbab-i-Jamaat' here on Tuesday night. The former Nazim-i-Aala of the Islami Jamiat-i-Tuleba, Pakistan, Zafar Jamal Baloch, Amir Jamaat-i-Islami, Sindh, Dr Mumtaz Memon, the president of the National Labour Federation, Sindh, Rana Mehmood Ali, and others spoke on the occasion.
The MMA leader said Gen Pervez Musharraf was bound to put off his uniform by Dec 31 under the article 63-D(1) of the Constitution.Mr Baloch said if he tried to make a mockery of the Constitution, then he would be made to leave both the posts.
He said the 17th constitutional amendment was approved following a written agreement between the MMA and the government. The MMA leader made it clear that Gen Musharraf would have to choose between his uniform and presidentship.
He said political orphans and the corrupt people who were wanted by the NAB could only survive under the umbrella of uniform. He said for that reason they were supporting uniform.
He accused the Punjab chief minister of violating the Constitution by supporting uniform. He said political parties within the government were responsible for widening the gulf between the army and the people, which had plunged the country in serious political crisis.
He said prime minister Shaukat Aziz was blackmailed to include corrupt people in the cabinet. He said an army of ministers was a burden on the national exchequer. He demanded that the supremacy of constitution and parliament should be restored and an impartial election commission should be appointed.
JSQM: The Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz here on Tuesday called off protest sit-in on the bypass road, giving seven days to police to arrest the murderers of JSQM activist, Gul Bhatti.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, the chairman of the party, Basheer Qureshi said activists had reached Hyderabad to stage a sit-in but the DPO investigation, Pir Fareed Jan Sarhandi contacted party leadership on several occasions and asked for some more time for the arrest of murderers.
He said a week's time had been given to police and added if the accused were not arrested by Sept 16, the party would go ahead with protest sit-in on the Hyderabad bypass on Sept 17.
He said the JSQM believed in non-violence but made it clear that the lives of workers were very precious. Answering a question, the JSQM chairman said the MQM was intoxicated with power and it had not even cared to express condolences on murders of JSQM activists. He said Liaquat Jatoi had been given the ministry of water and power to sabotage the case of Sindh on the water issue.
APPEAL: The Villagers' Coordination Council, Qasimabad, has appealed to the Sindh chief minister to pay a visit to the centuries-old villages of the area along with relevant officials and witness the villagers' plight.
