KARACHI, Aug 29: Following the submission of the inquiry report pertaining to the Gizri lock-up tragedy, in which two robbery suspects in custody had sustained fatal burns , the police have geared up their efforts for the arrest of the other members of the gang, led by a dismissed constable, Badshah Khan.

SSP Investigation Zone-I Manzoor Mughal told Dawn on Sunday that two gang members, Sarwar Khan and Ismail Khan, were arrested in a raid and three TT pistols were recovered from their possession. Badshah Khan, however, is still at large.

The SSP said that Sarwar Khan was involved in 12 and Ismail Khan in five cases of house robberies. Sarwar, he added, had also confessed to having raped some women during the robberies.

About the dead suspects, the SSP claimed that Saleem Khan was involved in nine and Ameer Zada in six cases of robberies and dacoities. Badshah Khan had been posted in Keamari Town, which was in the Investigation Zone-IV and not in the Zone-I, he clarified, adding that in the inquiry report it was erroneously stated that Badshah Khan belonged to the Zone-I.

Expressing the hope that Badshah Khan would soon be netted, the SSP revealed that a close associate of the ring-leader had been picked up and undergoing interrogation for a clue to him. A police team, he said, was set to leave for Mardan in search of Badshah Khan.

According to sources, Badshah Khan had been dismissed from service when the inquiry report, submitted on Friday, established that he had been leading the 22-member gang of criminals before the death of two suspects in the Gizri lock-up.
