KARACHI, Aug 20: The Karachi University Teachers' Society (KUTS) on Friday discussed the reported man handling of a teacher by a group of students a few days back.

At a general body meeting convened for the purpose, the teachers condemned the incident and demanded stern action against the students who manhandled Shaikh Mutahir Ahmed of the International Relations department on August 17.

Chaired by the KUTS President, Prof Suhail Barkati, the meeting expressed solidarity with the victim and impressed upon all students to refrain from resorting to violence while staging a demonstration on the campus.

Secretary of the Society Sarwar Nasim warned that violence against any teacher on the campus would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Prof Nasiruddin Khan suggested that the university administration should issue a notice intimating the concerned people about any event organized by student organizations on the campus in advance.

Dr Riaz Ahmed said that holding of a protest meeting on an issue was the right of students but protest and violence could not go together and students must realize this. Dr Moonis Ahmar, Syed Rais Ahmed, Dr Nighat Siddiqui, Dr Abdul Qadeer and Dr Abid Hasnain also expressed their views.

Meanwhile, the university's discipline committee has issued a show-cause notice to a student, Alamdar Hussain, for his alleged misbehaviour with Shaikh Mutahir Ahmed, asking him to clarify his position within seven days, according to a KU official.
