KARACHI, Aug 12: A comprehensive strategy aimed at curbing crime and eradicate criminal activities in Sindh will be announced soon, Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim announced on Thursday.
His announcement came during a presentation, held at the CM's House, on crime control system. Dr Arbab observed that there appeared to be various factors contributing to the commission of crimes. After looking into every aspect, he said, appropriate measures would be taken by the government.
He expressed satisfaction at the crime control system and appreciated the radio frequency information system. For a comprehensive review of the presentation, the chief minister has constituted a committee with Senior Minister Syed Sardar Ahmed as its head.
The committee will present its report soon and in the light of the same, the crime control strategy would be implemented. The other members of the committee are Minister for Home, Minister for Information Technology, IGP, additional chief secretary (home), irrigation and power secretary and DG Rangers.
It was stated at the briefing that the population of Karachi was increasing fast and the figure may touch 20 million in the next 10 years. "If due attention is not paid now to the problems in the city, the situation may take the shape of a big crisis," the chief minister was told with reference to the water, electricity, sewerage, law and order and other issues.
According to the future programme, there would be a computerized crime reporting and processing system at 400 police stations with a coordinated database. In addition, there would be a crime review system where record of every suspect and criminal would be maintained for the purpose of prompt identification of an accused.
At all important round abouts, there would be a system of traffic monitoring and control. The Internet public data network would also be utilized in controlling crime. The data-base consisting record of those involved in crimes would include photographs, finger prints and other necessary information.
WATERCOURSES: An amount of Rs22.5 billion has been earmarked for the lining of 29,000 watercourses in Sindh under a four-year programme. This was stated at a high-level meeting held here on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim. The meeting was convened to review the national programme of lining of watercourses.
Funded by international financial institutions, the project would help reduce water losses, the meeting was told. Dr Arbab said that a similar programme was being executed in the Punjab with honesty and it was producing better results. He hoped that the programme in Sindh would also be implemented with the same spirit.
The chief minister took serious note of slackness on the part of field assistants in discharging their professional duties, and directed agriculture secretary to monitor their performance. He warned of stern action if the slackness continued to be demonstrated.
Adviser to the Punjab Chief Minister Jehangir Khan Tareen, Sindh Minister for Food and Agriculture Arif Mustafa Jatoi, Joint Secretary Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Islamabad, Nasir Mehmood, Sindh Chief Secretary Muhammad Aslam Sanjrani, Sindh Irrigation Secretary Ashfaq Memon and Sindh Agriculture Secretary Sabhago Khan Jatoi were among those who attended the meeting. -APP/PPI
