WANA, Aug 10: Five wanted militants surrendered to the political authorities in Wana, regional headquarters of the South Waziristan agency, on Tuesday, officials said.
They said the militants turned themselves over to a tribal jirga in Shakai which handed them over to Assistant Political of Wana Agent Khan Bakhsh.
The surrendered persons have been identified as Nazir Khan, Baitullah, Ghulam Nabi, Ajab Noor and Khair Mohammad. The militants, who belonged to the Shakai valley, were accused of providing shelter to foreign militants in the region near the Afghan border.
Former federal minister Malik Fareedullah Khan brokered their surrender. The tribesmen of Shakai have already handed over 40 wanted persons to the administration.
HOUSES DEMOLISHED: Tribal volunteers demolished houses of two alleged collaborators of foreign militants in Zawara, South Waziristan, on Tuesday. About 600 armed volunteers belonging to Khoniakhel, Sperkai, Shudiakai and Khojelkhel tribes, sub-tribes of the Ahmadzai Wazir, demolished houses of Nazir Khan and Khanzada in Zawara village near the Afghan border.
Former federal minister Malik Fareedullah Khan led the tribal volunteers. Backed by Khasaddar force and personnel of the Frontier Corps, the volunteers demolished the residences with dynamite.
The action was taken in the light of an agreement signed at Shakai between the local authorities and tribesmen in July. Under the agreement, local people were required to provide security to the forces stationed inside the troubled valley. The administration suspected that militants last week carried out attacks on security forces from the residences of the two tribesmen.
