Aziz as PM a bane: PPP-P

KARACHI, Aug 5: The Pakistan People's Party-Parliamentarians has predicted that Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz's election as prime minister would culminate in Pakistan's total adherence to American security concerns and submission to the IMF and World Bank.

Deputy Secretary General of the party Mian Raza Rabbani, talking to a group of newsmen, here on Thursday, said that Mr Aziz was privy to those Kahuta sites access to which had been denied even to Ms Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif.

Pointing out that Mr Ishaq Dar of PML-N had revealed this in a Senate session, Mr Rabbani maintained that Mr Aziz had followed on the heels of Gen Pervez Musharraf's visit to Camp David, as a counter check.

He was of the view that "sending troops to Iraq or making American security interests pivotal part of our foreign policy can be made possible only when a man having no political roots in Pakistan is made in-charge of things here."

Referring to the claim by Mr Aziz of having broken the shackles of IMF and World Bank, Mian Rabbani said that on the contrary, the government had resorted to total submission to the two organizations.

He said that many loans had been got rescheduled and the after effects of the move would make future governments to suffer. Mian Raza Rabbani, who is the PPP-P's parliamentary leader in the Senate, accused the government of manipulating election laws.

"Some of the laws have been withdrawn while certain others amended, manipulated or interpreted to the advantage of Mr Shaukat Aziz." This, he said, would have material effect on the August 18 by-elections.

The PPP-P leader also pointed out that the PML had not held intra-party election as required under Article 12 of the Political Parties Order 2002. He said he had written to the Election Commission that the PML did not qualify for an election symbol as it did not meet the requirement under the Article 12 of the PPO 2002.
