KARACHI, July 27: Around 300 A category houses in North Karachi's Sector 11-A have been getting contaminated water for the last one month.
Residents of the affected houses complained that a large number of houses, starting from A-200 to A-500, were being supplied stinking water, but the KWSB officials have not yet bothered to rectify the faults responsible for water contamination despite the fact that a number of complaints had been lodged with the latter.
Suspecting that sewage water might be seeping into their locality's pipeline, they demanded of the city Nazim and the KWSB managing director to direct the officials concerned to rectify the fault, or else an epidemic of water-borne diseases could break out in their locality.
SHORTAGE: Acute water shortage continued to persist in various parts of the city on Wednesday. The worst affected localities included North Karachi, sectors 5D/1, 11-A, 11-B, 14-A and 14-B; Malir, Saudia Colony, Model Colony, Khokarapar, various parts of Lyari, Kharadar, Haquani Chowk, Pakistan Chowk, Clifton; Gulshan-i-Iqbal, blocks 2 and 4-A; Gulistan-i-Jauhar's blocks 13 and 10; and Baldia, Orangi and Shershah.
Residents of the affected localities deplored that in the absence of piped water, they had no choice but to either purchase water from private tankers at exorbitant rates or to consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.
ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS: At least 50 houses, situated in PECHS Block 6, near 'E' Market, have been deprived of water for the last couple of months. Attributing the cause of their lingering water issue to the illegal connections being provided to the nearby commercial concerns by the KWSB officials, residents of the locality deplored that all their complaints in this regard had, so far, remain unheeded.
They alleged that on one hand, residents of over 50 houses, situated in the locality often remained without water, and on the other hand, the trend of giving illegal connections from their pipeline to the nearby commercial concerns was going on unabated, and no no-objection-certificate (NOC) was acquired for the purpose.
