COLOMBO, July 21: Sachin Tendulkar shone with bat and ball as India outclassed Bangladesh in the second round of the Asia Cup at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground on Wednesday.
Tendulkar snapped up three wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 177 in 49.1 overs and then guided India to an eight-wicket win with 82, including 10 fours and one six.
Tendulkar shared a 154-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Saurav Ganguly, who scored 60. Virender Sehwag started the innings with a flurry of boundaries, racing to 16 from eight deliveries, before being caught at point by Alok Kapali off Tareq Aziz.
India raced to their victory target, winning with 11.3 overs to spare, to claim a valuable bonus point. Earlier, teenage left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan had taken two wickets in two balls to leave Bangladesh reeling in the third over.
Pathan bowled captain Habibul Bashar for two before trapping Rajin Saleh leg before. He also removed the last Bangladesh batsman to complete figures of three for 32. Tendulkar claimed three for 35 from his 10 overs.
Opener Mohammad Ashraful top-scored for Bangladesh with 35 before being run out by Yuvraj Singh. Reduced to 117 for seven in the 33rd over, Bangladesh rallied with a brisk stand of 35 for the ninth wicket between Khaled Mahmud, who scored 22, and Abdur Razzaq (21).
India's bowlers contributed generously to Bangladesh's total with 37 extras, including 23 wides. India recalled Vangipurappu Laxman, who recovered from a leg injury sustained while practising in Dambulla, in place of wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel.
Rahul Dravid took over behind the stumps. Left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan also missed the game with a hamstring injury. A further assessment of his condition will be made during the next 24 hours.
Fellow left-armer Ashish Nehra was drafted in to replace Khan while off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was brought in for his first game of the tournament instead of leg-spinner Anil Kumble. Javed Omar, who struck half-centuries in both Bangladesh's preliminary league matches, was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
