KARACHI, May 22: There is need for tougher action against violators of traffic rules to effectively check the menace of road accidents.

This was observed by Commander Karachi, Rear Admiral Mohammed Haroon, while addressing the 5th Karavan Karachi PSO Road Sense Programme at the PSO House on Wednesday. He said, people should first realize their responsibilities and only then demand rights.

He said a driver has only two options: convenience and safety. “The convenience is in breaking rules, while safety lies in following regulations.” He asked adults to become role models for children by observing rules and cooperating with the police.

Managing Director, Pakistan State Oil, Tariq Kirmani, said that because of prevalent security considerations, a delay in the programme was suggested. “But I said children must keep getting exposure to rule of law,” and thus the programme is being held according to schedule.

He said that the PSO had installed traffic signs in Karachi and Lahore, while these may also be set up in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. “Children who get lost can find their way back home through these signs,” he added.

DIG Police (Traffic), Saud A. Mirza, said that the ratio of accidents in Karachi had reduced by 8.57 per cent because of increased awareness among citizens and police efforts. He urged citizens to cooperate with police so that accidents could be further reduced.

Yasmeen Lari, chairperson of Heritage Wallay, in her address, appreciated PSO’s support to the programme and explained its objectives.

Later, Admiral Haroon inaugurated a poster exhibition at the PSO House atrium. This was followed by a quiz competition, street theatre and awarding of prizes and souvenirs to the children.—PPI
