KARACHI, July 7: Commercial activities were forced to stop in some parts of the city on Wednesday morning by youths after the killing of a Sunni Tehreek activist in Baldia Town on late Tuesday night.
Ashfaq, 25, died when unknown persons in Baldia Town No 2 opened fire on him. His associate Jameel was injured. Police said that unknown persons came to a factory located on Mir Alam Khan Road in Baldia town and knocked at the door. As the door was opened, unknown persons opened fire.
Armed guards present inside the factory retaliated, and an exchange of fire continued for half an hour. However, as the police reached the spot, the attackers fled the scene.
Police said two guards were wounded in the firing, who were rushed to hospital. One of them named Ashfaq died on the way, while the other, Jameel was under treatment.
The deceased was in-charge of Gulshan-i-Ghazi unit of the Sunni Tehreek. The owner of an industrial unit, Mr Altaf had reportedly received a threat by some unknown persons, demanding Rs200,000 as extortion money.
Police said that instead of reporting the matter to the police, the factory owner told his friend, Sunni Tehreek leader Iftikhar Bhatti, who asked two of his party activists Ashfaq and Jameel to give duty at the factory. Police said an FIR was lodged against Siddiq Bucha and others.
DIES: A driver of the Zardari House died on Wednesday in what police said was accidental firing on the premises of Zardari House. Police said Mir Muhammad Leghari, 55, suffered multiple bullet wounds when an AK-47 belonging to a guard, Qalandar Bux went off accidentally.
