ISLAMABAD, June 28: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on Monday set three conditions for extending support to People's Party Parliamentarians candidate Makhdoom Amin Fahim in the election for the leader of the house to be held on Tuesday.

The MMA supreme council, which met here on Monday with its acting president Qazi Hussain Ahmed in the chair, stated that if the PPP agreed to withdraw its bill seeking amendment to the Hudood Ordinance, recognized Maulana Fazulr Rehman as the leader of the opposition and agreed to a foreign policy governed by the country's ideology then the alliance would extend its support to Amin Fahim in the election for the leader of the house.

Talking to newsmen after the meeting at the parliament house, Qazi Hussain Ahmed said the MMA had offered its support to the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy if it fielded Makhdoom Javed Hashmi as consensus candidate but the ARD had already endorsed the candidature of Mr Amin Fahim.

He said the MMA had not contacted the People's Party Parliamentarians in this regard but the religious parties alliance would support Amin Fahim only if the PPP accepted the three conditions.

He said both the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and the PML-N shared similar views on a number of issues, including Hudood laws, educational syllabus and foreign policy.

AMIN FAHIM: Talking to newsmen after filing nomination papers, People's Party Parliamentarian's chief Amin Fahim had claimed that former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali had not tendered his resignation voluntarily.

He said the nomination of Chaudhry Shujaat as the next leader of the house by Mr Jamali and handing over resignation to party president was unconstitutional and highly intriguing. He said no democratic institution in Pakistan was being allowed to function properly and in this atmosphere democracy could not progress.
