SRINAGAR, June 11: Five people, including an army officer, were killed in fresh fighting in occupied Kashmir on Friday, while three Mujahideen and about a dozen of their supporters were detained, police said.

The officer and two Mujahideen were killed in a two-hour firefight in northern Kupwara district, police said, adding that a bomb had killed a paramilitary trooper in the same district.

In a separate incident, a civilian died in crossfire between freedom fighters and troops in the southern district of Udhampur, police said. Police said meanwhile they had detained three Mujahideen - Yasin Malik, Javed Mir and Sheikh Aziz - and about a dozen of their supporters on Friday near the village of Bogund, where a clash destroyed a mosque a day earlier.

"They were detained to maintain law and order," a police officer said. Security officials said three Mujahideen and a soldier were killed during the 27-hour stand-off between Mujahideen holed up in the mosque and Indian troops. -AFP
