KHAIRPUR, June 9: District Nazim Nafisa Shah has banned the cultivation of rice crop in the limits of irrigation west division Khairpur due to a shortage of water. The ban will continue for two months.

A notification in this connection said that no grower should transplant paddy seedlings in the restricted areas and whosoever had cultivated the crop should remove it immediately. The notification warned that if growers failed to do so, their crop should be destroyed by the revenue department officials.

Mukhtiarkars concerned have been authorized to lodge reports at police stations against the violators. The executive engineer irrigation west division Khairpur had recommended the ban on the cultivation of paddy crop due to the water shortage in the Indus river.

WOMAN KILLED: An elderly woman was killed after she was hit by a pickup (CD-4995) on the National Highway at the Gambat Mour Sachal gate, Ranipur, on Tuesday night. The woman was identified as Hawa Khatoon.

Police impounded the vehicle and arrested the driver, Noor Mohammad Larik. The body of the deceased was handed over to her relatives after postmortem. Meanwhile, a man was shot dead by three robbers in the Kot Mir Mohammad village, Kingri taluka, here on Tuesday night.

The armed men entered the house of Zameer Ahmad Mangi for robbery and opened fire when inmates woke up and offered resistance. Mr Mangi, 30, was killed in the firing. The body of the man was handed over to his relatives after postmortem. Wazir Mangi lodged an FIR at the Faiz Mohammad Bindo police station against three persons, including Mohammad Nawaz Mangi, on Wednesday.
