LAHORE, May 20: Acting Nazim Farooq Amjad Mir has said the district government would regularize the service of all the contract teachers serving in the schools run by the defunct Municipal Corporation of Lahore after the ban on recruitment was lifted by the provincial government.

He made the announcement at the annual meeting of the All-Teachers Association at the Jinnah Hall here on Monday.

Mr Mir said the teachers would be posted near their residence on receipt of applications in accordance with the posting policy of the government.

He also announced constitution of a committee to formulate the promotion policy of the teachers. The committee would submit its report in two months. He said the possibility of appointing the district officer and deputy district officer (education) from amongst the former municipal cadre teachers would also be examined sympathetically.

He said the district government would approach the provincial government for giving the former municipal cadre teachers the service benefits available to the general cadre teachers. The teachers should also respond by devoting at least three hours a day for imparting instructions to their students honestly and abandoning the corruption culture.

Nishtar Town Nazim Maj Rafiq Hasrat (retired) supported the demands of the teachers and urged them to improve the standard of education in the government schools for competing with the private schools.

He said the children of the poor could not think of getting enrolled in private schools due to prohibitive fees.

EDO (education) Dr Chaudhry Akram said genuine problems of the teachers would be solved but their promotions would be ordered on the basis of their performance evaluation.

All-Teachers Association chairman Abdur Razzaq Salam and president Mian Ishaq Kamiana said the district Nazim should inspect the buildings of schools. They said most of the buildings were in a bad shape and required major repairs.

They also demanded representation of the teachers on the committee proposed to be constituted for recommending the channel of their promotions. They said the district government teachers should be allowed benefits at par with their counterparts in general cadre and the pre-1991 CT teachers should be granted BS 9.
