LAHORE, April 20: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded a cut in duty on import of cars to check the ongoing black marketeering in the country.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the LCCI said import of reconditioned cars was not advisable for checking black marketeering of cars as it would impede the development of the automobile industry in the country.

Decrease in duty on import would stabilize the prices by creating competition between importers and manufacturers of cars and filling the demand and supply gap. It stressed the need for strict enforcement of the deletion programme to facilitate the development of the vendor industry in the country.

It also demanded lifting of ban on import of used auto-parts because the business was already continuing illegally. It said import of used auto-parts was necessary because the spare parts of many imported vehicles were not available in the market.
