LAHORE, May 19: The fancied bay Blu’s Wendy, ridden by jockey Khurrum Sheikh, strode to a close victory in the feature event of the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Sunday.

Blu Wendy led from start to finish to defeat an onrushing roan horse Love Moon by three-fourth of a length. The blue-roan gelding Shannel finished third about two lengths further.

Rank outsider chestnut Rukhsh caused the biggest upset of the day in the fourth race. Ridden by riding boy M.Jehangir Rukhsh beat another long shot chestnut gelding Lake District by one-and-three quarters of a length. Bay colt Taj-ul-Malook finished third three lengths further behind after nosing out another gelding Senna to fourth position.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards cancelled the first race due to an anticipated lack of competition. As the horses reached the starting gate, it transpired that except the bay gelding Flying Fin and the chestnut colt Boogie Woogie, no other mount was sent to perform on merit. The stewards cancelled the race before it was run.

The start of the second race was considerably delayed due to the last minute withdrawal of two contestants — Dane Hill and Thunder Storm.

Trainer Akhtar Mir had the distinction of saddling two winners. He sent out even-money favourite Oneeza and long shot Lucky Credit Queen in the second and third race, respectively.
