ISLAMABAD, May 19: Discrepancies have been detected in the electoral rolls prepared by the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) for the federal capital, a source informed Dawn.

It is for the first time that voters’ list of 18-21 years old people have been prepared so that they could vote in the forthcoming local government and general elections.

A number of discrepancies had been detected in the list issued by Nadra, the source said. “Many of the under-age residents of other parts of the country have been included in the list,” he said.

“In some cases a person’s name has been written in six different places in the list,” the source said, adding many people have not been included in the list although they have attained 18 years of age.

When contacted an official of the Election Commission said on Sunday that the EC had started receiving objections on the electoral rolls so that the discrepancies could be removed.

People could file their claims and objections on the list by June 1, the official said.

The decision on the objections would be sent to Nadra for the final preparation of the list which is expected to be issued by June 15, he said.

For instance the people of Kurang Town, which is part of Islamabad, were earlier not enlisted, but after being corrected by the EC, they have now been included in the fresh electoral rolls.

The EC official said Nadra had prepared the list according to the 1998 census and the people who were not in the voting age group then, have not been enrolled although they have now attained the age required, to vote.

“The EC is thus receiving fresh claims to enlist those who have not been registered even after having attained the age of 18 years,” the official added.

After adding the names of people who have attained the age of 21 the number of voters has increased to 450,000 from 233,822 registered voters, the source said.

The official said the exact number of voters of 18-year of age would be announced after the final list is issued by Nadra.
