KARACHI, March 29: Although official results of local government byelections are yet to be announced, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement said on Monday that it swept elections not only in Karachi , but also in Hyderabad and also made inroads in the strongholds of the PPP in northern Sindh.

Out of 115 seats in the metropolis, the MQM said that its 91 Haq Parast candidates won the byelections. They included 12 Nazims and Naib Nazims, the MQM claimed. It also claimed that it had virtually swept Hyderabad and 67 of its candidates returned unopposed.

Haq Parast candidates also won in Badin, Larkana, Dadu, Thatta, Tando Jam and other areas of Sindh. The MQM also released a list of its 242 successful candidates from all over Sindh.

Provincial Election Commission sources said they have forwarded the results to Islamabad. Meanwhile, the MQM alleged that armed activists of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, particularly of Jamaat-i-Islami, in order to sabotage the local bodies' bye-elections resorted to vandalism and abducted its four workers.
