PESHAWAR, March 28: Like elsewhere in the country, by-elections were held for the 11 union councils of the city district here on Sunday. The turnout, however, was thin on all polling stations in inner city areas. The polling was completed in a peaceful atmosphere.
The by-elections were held in Hassan Garhi, Andur Shehr, Hayatabad-II, Landi Arbab, Chagharmati, Urmar Bala, Karimpura, Malkander and Pishtekhara Payan union councils.
Officials in the provincial Election Commission said that the polling had been completed in all 107 union councils of the NWFP and no untoward incident had been reported from any part of the province.
The women candidates also contested for the vacant seats in the inner city areas. Their presence in the contest aroused enthusiasm amongst the womenfolk. They turned up in large numbers to cast vote.
According to unofficial results, Razaullah defeated his immediate rival, Jalaluddin, in Chagarmati. Mokammal Shah was elected nazim of Urmar Bala, Hayat Khalil as general councillor from Pishtakhara Payan, Zahid Hussain as nazim Landi Arbab, Ismael Jan as nazim Hasan Ghari-I and Sher Farzand as naib nazim Andur Shehr.
Haripur: Ghalib Shah won nazim's seat by defeating his rival Arshid Malik in Dhindah, Haripur. Election commission's member, Justice Ehsanullah Qureshi, visited many polling stations and witnessed the peaceful conduct of the polling process. He expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made for the by-polls.
