KARACHI, Feb 20: The former Orangi Town Nazim, who was arrested on Thursday for misappropration of official funds, was remanded on Friday to Anti-Corruption Establishment for interrogation.

The ACE had arrested Shahid Alam, also known as Guddu Bihari, from his Clifton residence for his alleged involvement in misappropriation of Rs10 million funds meant for development works.

Shahid Alam had been removed from the post of an elected Town Nazim through a notification issued by the Sindh Local Government Department after he had been accused with various charges of corruption.

He has also been on an anticipatory bail in a murder case from the District and Sessions Court, West, since Aug 20, 2003. He was earlier granted the interim pre-arrest bail on July 8, 2003, in the same case in sum of Rs100,000.

DONATION CASES: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of two cases of donation collection after recording the statement of the accused on Friday. Both the cases, registered by the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police, are being tried by the ATC-V, headed by Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch, who fixed Monday for the next hearing when the accused would produce witnesses in their defence.

Syed Khalid Raza, Abdus Salam and Shakirullah were arrested on Nov 22, 2003 in front of Masjid-i-Quba in Gulshan-i- Iqbal, Block-7, where they were allegedly collecting donations from the passers-by. The police had seized Rs2,500, a banner and two receipt books from the activists.

Three other activists - Farrukh Nafees, Suleman Khan and Nauman - were arrested in front of Siddiq-i-Akbar mosque in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Block-7, while collecting donations from the passers-by.

According to prosecution, Farrukh Nasim, carrying a receipt book, was collecting money from the people and the two others were holding a banner. Besides, the police also seized Rs1,500 from the accused.
