KARACHI, May 17: An anti-terrorism court sentenced two workers of Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan to life in jail for killing 10 faithfuls in an attack on an imambargah.
Judge Abdul Ghafoor Memon of ATC-2, who pronounced the judgement around 8:30am, also ordered Dilawar Hussain alias Dildar and Saeed Awan alias Saeed Kalia to pay Rs180,000 to the legal heirs of each victim as Diyat (compensation).
The judge imposed a fine of Rs200,000 each on the two SSP workers, who had earlier been condemned to death in a separate case of sectarian killings. The defaulter on the payment of fine would have to undergo an additional two-year term, the judge ordered.
Nine people were killed and five injured, one of them fatally, when worshippers were sprayed with bullets during Fajr prayers at Hur Mosque in Al-Falah Colony, off Sharea Faisal.
Those killed included Syed Ejaz Hussain Kazmi, 50; Syed Zulfiqar Anwar Taqvi, 45; Mohammad Nawaz, 50; Syed Husnain Naqvi, 53; Syed Safdar Abbas Naqvi, 21; Jamshed Abbas, 35; Nazeer Ahmed, 55; Imtiaz Husain, 18 and Amjad Ali, 18. Syed Hasnain Naqvi and Syed Safdar Abbas Naqvi were father and son, respectively.
The wounded included Ghulam Hussain (Pesh Imam), Syed Tasweer Hussain (Moazzan), Mohammad Anwar and Altaf Hussain.
The two SSP men were also sentenced to a 10-year term for attempting to kill other faithfuls. A fine of Rs50,000 each was imposed on the convicts.
The judge sentenced Dilawar and Saeed to a seven-year term for inflicting injuries on the faithfuls. A one-year term was also awarded to them under Section 337-E.
Special public prosecutor, Mazhar Qayyum, represented the state.
MUTTAHIDA MEN: The additional district and sessions judge, East, Syed Sagher Zaidi, acquitted on Friday two leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a case pertaining to resorting to violent activities.
Kunwar Khalid Younus and Dr Farooq Sattar were exonerated from all charges as the prosecution could not establish its case against them.
The case against the Muttahida men, including party chief Altaf Hussain, was registered on May 2, 1994, for setting a Suzuki van on fire in Korangi.
The court also declared Altaf Hussain, Prof A.K. Shams, Dr Sagheer Ansari, Khalid Murtaza, Waseem Akhtar, Haroon Siddiqui, S.M. Mohiuddin and others as proclaimed offenders in the case.
This was the 87th case against Kunwar Khalid Younus in which he was acquitted. He is still facing six more cases.
ACQUITTED: The judicial magistrate, Pervezul Qadir Memon, acquitted seven workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a case pertaining to violent activities during a party-sponsored strike.
The magistrate acquitted Fahim Ahmed, Syed Hasan Ali, Ali Shah, Arshad and Anver as the prosecution could not find any evidence against them.
RAPISTS CONVICTED: The additional district and sessions court, Central, Ghulam Qadir Leghari, convicted two men for kidnapping and attempting to rape an eight-year-old girl in Buffer Zone on Feb 4, 1998.
The judge sentenced Ashfaq to suffer RI for 10 years and co- accused Ayub to a five-year term.
The two had kidnapped the daughter of Mrs Shahida, and Ashfaq attempted rape.
BAIL GRANTED: The additional district and sessions judge, Bashir Ahmed Khoso, granted bail to a woman charged for murdering her husband.
The judge granted Farzana bail against a sum of Rs100,000.
The woman was booked in the murder case of her husband, Habib Shah, by the Quaidabad police on the complaint of her brother-in- law, Nazim Shah, on June 15, 2000.
According to the FIR, the woman shot her husband dead in their house.
Meanwhile, the judicial magistrate, Manzoor Siddiqui, acquitted the woman in the case pertaining to the possession of the unlicensed pistol she had allegedly used in the murder.
The woman alleged that her husband was murdered by his younger brother, Nazim Shah, over a property dispute.
BAIL REJECTED: The additional district and sessions judge, Salim Jan Khan, rejected the bail application of Yasin Shah, an accused charged with the murder of two policemen.
Yasin Shah, along with other accomplices, allegedly raided the Civil Hospital to rescue his interned maternal uncle, Asghar Shah, and killed constables Muhammed Ali and Fahim on April 28, 1998.
SPP MEN: An anti-terrorism court adjourned the hearing of a double murder case against four workers of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, after recording the statements of two prosecution witnesses.
The case against Dilawar Hussain alias Dildar, Shahzad Maqsood, Abdul Wasim and Muhammed Saeed Awan alias Saeed Kalia pertained to the murder of a Moazzan and Chowkidar of Askari Imambargah on Feb 9, last year, in Jauharabad.
According to the prosecution, represented by Mazhar Qayyum, the four accused, along with an absconding accused, Asif Ramzi, shot dead the Moazzan, Imtiaz Hussain and Chowkidar, Muhammed Abbas.
