LAHORE, Aug 29: The Kissan Board Pakistan urged the government on Friday to save farmers of Rahim Yar Khan from what it alleged the highhandedness of officials.

In a statement board president Sadiq Khakwani and secretary-general Ibrahim Mughal alleged that an adviser to the chief minister, district Nazim and officials of the irrigation department had made the lives of farmers miserable in the name of ensuring water at the tail-ends of canals.

They alleged that the officials could not ensure water at the tail ends but had taken the water rates out of the reach of the farmers.

Even the protocol of the ministers with regard to the water at the tail ends had been eliminated, they claimed.

They alleged the provincial irrigation minister was opposing corporate farming but the adviser and his cronies had almost implemented the scheme. Under this plan they wanted to grow sugarcane over fields of 15,000 acres of land which was suitable for cotton, rendering a loss to national exports.
