LARKANA, Jan 12: On the call of the Pakistan People's Party (Shaheed Bhutto), a strike was observed in different parts of Sindh on Monday to protest against the killing of its leader Ali Sonara.
The activists of the Sindh People's Students Federation (Shaheed Bhutto) took to the streets here and forced traders to shut down their business. But with the arrival of the police, normal trade activities were resumed while the protesters confined themselves to the party office in Kennedy Market.
The police arrested eight activists - Qadir Aheer, Abdul Khaliq Junejo, Mushtaq Mugheri, Majid Solangi, Nazeer Kori, Rajib Ali, Nawaz Rind and Aijaz Buledi - who were later released, sources said.
DADU: A large number of party workers staged a rally to protest the killing of Mr Sonara.
JACOBABAD: A procession was taken out by PPP-SB activists to protest against the killing of Mr Sonara.
NAWABSHAH: Activists of the PPP-SB burnt tyres in protest and fired in the air to force traders to close down their business. Shops at Sakrand road were closed after the aerial firing but other parts of city remained opened.
The police arrested two persons - Gulzar and Mor Rind - suspecting them to be party activists. However, no FIR was lodged till the filing of this report.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: PPP-SB activists took out a protest procession in the city and forced shopkeepers to close down their shops for two hours besides burning tyres and blocking roads. They demanded that the killers of Mr Sonara should be arrested in 24 hours.
BADIN: Most of the shops and markets remained closed as party activists asked traders to close down their trade and join the strike. The protesters also burnt tyres in various parts of the city and disrupted the traffic flow.
Though no serious incident was reported, however, some activists allegedly damaged a PCO, run by Mohammad Moosa Memon, general secretary, People's Youth.
An urgent party meeting was called which decided to observe a seven-day mourning and also hold demonstrations throughout the district on Tuesday.
