KARACHI, Jan 12: Rapid advancement in the sphere of medical research and technology has turned many of the complicated conditions related to ear and nose absolutely curable , provided due attention is extended towards training of the medical personnel and provision for appropriate infrastructure.
Speaking at a seminar, "New trends in the treatment of ENT diseases", ENT Surgeon Dr Fasihullah Mir particularly discussed the application of endoscopes and laser to treat relevant diseases.
Referring to endoscopic sinus surgery, he mentioned that the treatment had produced 100 per cent success rate even in Pakistan. With regard to varied technologies available in the country to treat hearing impairment, the surgeon claimed possibility of complete restoration of the faculty again through the application of endoscopes and lasers.
The speaker attributed hearing disability to stiffness of bones in the ear. He added that the condition among children was mainly due to viral infections caused to mothers during pregnancy.
In this context, he also spoke about cochlear implant surgery, through which a single channel cochlear implant is placed in the ear of the patient, who may have developed total deafness.
Dr Mir also referred to his professional experience regarding the new technique to treat blockage of nasolacrimal duct, tear duct and small thin tubular connection between eyes and nose.
According to him, it is through proper application of latest laser endoscopes that 100 per cent success in the treatment procedure has been ensured adding that the intervention termed Dacroystorhinostomy (DCR) comprises use of laser without any external incision.
In close coordination with senior eye surgeon Dr Qazi Wasiq, Dr Mir said, several DCR surgical procedures were ensured at Spencer Eye Hospital and ENT Hospital, Malir, which were not only time efficient, but also cost effective. Dr Qazi Wasiq elaborated the process mentioning that blockage of the nasolacrimal ductcauses constant flow of tears from eyes. -APP
