PESHAWAR, May 12: A British journalist of Indian origin, Amardeep Basey, was arrested by security agencies on Friday at Torkham Pakistan-Afghan border.

Basey, who is said to be attached to Sunday Mirror, UK, was handed over to the Joint Investigation team of different agencies.

His associates in Peshawar told Dawn that Basey had reached Islamabad early this month with valid visas for both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

With the help of two tribesmen he entered Afghanistan from Khyber Agency on Wednesday last, but he did get an “Exit” stamp on his passport.

On Friday he returned back to Pakistan via Torkham. His friends claimed that before entering Pakistan when he tried to get “Entry” stamp on his passport, he was nabbed by concerned authorities for not having an “Exit” stamp on his passport when he first left the country. This, according the authorities, is a violation of the Passport Act.

Basey had reportedly visited Pakistan on numerous occasions in the past in connection with his professional duties.
