LAHORE, Oct 6: Nida Rahim was made to sweat by her twin sister Maira before winning the International world junior ranking tennis championship girls title 6-3 7-6 (7/4) at the Punjab Tennis Association grass courts in Bagh-i-Jinnah Saturday.

Shahzad Khan and Munir Ashiq captured the boys’s doubles crown, defeating brothers Gulzeb Niazi and Shahrukh Niazi 6-2 6-1.

The boy’s singles final between top seed Shahzad Khan and second seed Salman Bashir will be played Sunday at 3pm.

The girls final was a family affair between twin sisters Nida and Maira. Although, Nida had remained sidelined for over two months because of a shoulder injury, she exhibited better court crafts and baseline game to win.

After losing the first set easily, Maira came from behind before serving for the set at 6-5. But she committed three unforced errors in the crucial 12th game to squander the opportunity of taking the final into the third set.

In the tie-breaker, Nida moved Maira around the court and hit a brace of winners both with the forehand and backhand shots to win the tie-break at 7-4.

In the boys’ doubles final, the second seed pair of Shahzad Khan and Munir Ashiq stunned the top seed pair of Gulzeb Niazi and Shahrukh Niazi in a one-sided final 6-2, 6-1.

Shahzad and Munir combined well to excel in all departments of the game. They served well, hit crisp volleys and returned better.

In the second set, the Niazi pair tried the tactic of playing from the baseline but to no avail.
