FAISALABAD, May 9: Teachers and the other staff of the local colleges will observe a complete strike on Saturday to press the government for the release of Prof Mehmood Anwar.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association held here on Thursday. The meeting decided to hold a protest demonstration at the local Government College on Saturday in protest against the indifferent attitude of government officials in arresting Prof Mehmood.
It may be noted here that an altercation cropped up between the polling staff and the additional district and sessions judge during a training programme held for the presidential referendum. Both the judge and the professor exchanged hot words. But the principal of the Government College, Samundari, reconciled the matter.
Despite a patch-up, the judge got registered a case against the professor who was arrested on April 29, but released after the intervention of higher authorities. He was again arrested after the referendum.
The meeting was of the view that there was no justification to arrest Prof Mehmood after a patch-up with the judge. It decided that ‘appeals’ would be got published in newspapers for highlighting the issue. Protest rallies will be held in case the professor was not released within a couple of days.
The meeting demanded the governor to constitute a committee to probe into the matter so that responsible persons may be dealt with an iron hand.
TUG OF WAR: A tug of war is going on between some union council Nazimeen and tehsil municipal administration employees over keeping attendance record of the sanitary staff and daily-wagers.
Nazimeen have in separate letters asked the tehsil Nazim and the tehsil municipal officer to send attendance registers of the sanitary staff and daily-wagers to union council offices so that they could be deputed in their areas under the direct command of Nazimeen and councillors. But the TMA officials are reluctant to do the same.
The Nazimeen alleged the TMA officials and heads of the departments concerned were embezzling huge amounts on account of salaries of sanitary workers and daily-wagers. They said they had a right to check the attendance and performance of employees of their respective areas.
But on the other hand, TMA officials especially sanitary inspectors refused to sign the attendance registers at the UC offices on the plea that it was a violation of rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, heaps of garbage were seen lying in most of the city streets and roads as the sanitary staff had refused to work under the command of UC Nazimeen.
CENTRES CHANGED: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Faisalabad, has changed the sites of two centres just two days before the start of FA, FSc examinations.
