KARACHI, May 9: Dr Imran Farooq, the convener of Muttahida Qaumi Movement coordination committee, has condemned the government decision to construct “greater Thal canal” and termed it an injustice to Sindh.
In a statement faxed from London, he recalled that people of Sindh had rejected the Kalabagh Dam and Thal Canal projects and they had been protesting against these “anti-Sindh projects”. Besides, he said, at the IRSA meeting, the representative of Sindh had opposed the construction of the canal, but despite an opposition by the Sindh government and protests by the people of the province, the establishment gave an approval to the project.
Dr Imran Farooq warned that if rights were continuously denied, it would create a sense of deprivation among the people and would weaken the country. He urged the government to review the project.
PTI: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s central Vice President Dr Arif Alvi has also criticised the government decision to construct Thal canal.
Presiding over a party meeting on Thursday, Dr Alvi said that serious water shortages were being faced by Sindh which have created a mistrust between provinces.
He said Sindh had already been facing water shortage and the federation cannot afford further misunderstandings on the issue, therefore, better understanding be developed between Sindh and Punjab and the Thal project be decided by consensus.
