BAHAWALPUR, May 8: Scores of wheat growers have started selling their produce at throwaway prices to avoid food department’s complicated procedure of acquiring gunny bags and disposal of wheat, it is learnt.
The growers complained they had to face a great deal of difficulty in getting gunny bags through advance payments and carrying wheat to centres.
They also complained of the ill-treatment by food officials. “Unless the food officials do not change attitude towards growers, they will fail to benefit from the government’s scheme,” they said.
Meanwhile, the Punjab agriculture minister said the intending landlords could get gunny bags only with the attestation of their respective union council Nazimeen or their deputies in addition to that of revenue department’s officials.
He directed the officials concerned to display instructions prominently at all the centres for the guidance of farmers.
ESTABLISHMENT: The local education department, on the orders of the governor, is making arrangements for the establishment of three new degree colleges for women in Tibba Badar Shair, Hasilpur and Ahmadpur East.
Dawn learnt on Wednesday the Hasilpur college project, after its approval by the district development committee and the education department, had been forwarded to the planning and development division for final approval.
In Ahmadpur East, land acquisition case for the college has been moved to the Punjab Board of Revenue while in Bahawalpur, the education department is reportedly making contacts with tehsil Nazim for the acquisition of land.
It is proposed to acquire about 100-kanal tract in Tibba Badar Shair.
