Deposits of scheduled banks higher

According to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended August 23, 2008, deposits and other accounts of the scheduled banks stood at Rs3,785.669 billion, higher by Rs7.075 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs3,778.594 billion.

Commercial banks deposits showed a rise of Rs6.424 billion over the week to Rs3,773.890 billion, against preceding week’s Rs3,767.466 billion. Specialized banks deposits stood at Rs11.779 billion, against preceding week’s Rs11.488 billion, a rise of Rs0.291 billion.

Borrowings by all scheduled banks increased during the week over preceding week’s figure. It rose to Rs395.265 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs388.664 billion, a rise of Rs6.601 billion. This was due to a rise in the borrowings by commercial banks, which rose to Rs313.883 billion against previous week’s Rs307.197 billion, or by Rs6.686 billion. Borrowings by specialised banks stood at Rs81.382 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs87.467 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs2,894.915 billion in the week under review, a rise of Rs9.044 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,885.871 billion. Advances by commercial banks increased to Rs2,795.847 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs2,786.618 billion, or by Rs9.229 billion. Advances of specialised banks stood at Rs99.068 billion, lower by Rs0.185 billion over earlier week’s figure of Rs99.253 billion.

Investments of all scheduled banks decreased in the week by Rs1.586 billion to Rs1,067.750 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs1,069.336 billion. Commer-cial banks investment fell to Rs1,054.095 billion, from earlier week’s Rs1,055.561 billion, or by Rs1.466 billion. Specialised banks investment stood at Rs13.655 billion, against preceding week’s Rs13.775 billion, smaller by Rs0.12 billion.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks increased by Rs10.31 billion during the week to stand at Rs449.068 billion against earlier week’s Rs438.758 billion. The figure for commercial banks stood at Rs445.983 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs435.782 billion, a rise of Rs10.201 billion, while of specialised banks it stood at Rs3.085 billion over previous week’s Rs2.976 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs5,067.284 billion, larger by Rs15.173 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs5,052.111 billion.

Meanwhile, commercial banks assets stood at Rs4,940.291 billion, larger by Rs14.91 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs4,925.381 billion. Specialised banks assets rose to Rs126.993 billion, or by Rs0.262 billion over previous week’s Rs126.731 billion.
