KARACHI, Aug 27: The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) on Wednesday announced results of the Higher Secondary School Certificate Part-II, Science (Pre-medical) group annual examination 2008. The overall pass percentage stood at 51.32.

Ailiya Rizvi, daughter of Syed Muzaffar Ali Rizvi, (Roll No. 460131) with 90.27 per cent marks, and Anam Hareem, daughter of Sardar Mohammad Amin (Roll No.460103), with 89.54 per cent marks clinched first and second positions, respectively. Both the toppers are students of the BAMM PECHS Government College for Women.

The third position was bagged by Mohammad Danish Saleem (Roll No 452503), son of Saleem Ullah Sheikh, with 88.09 per cent marks. He is a student of the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karimabad.

Out of a total of 3,620 male candidates enrolled by the board, 3,546 appeared in the examination and 1,449 (40 per cent) of them emerged successful. A total of 12,979 out of the 13,128 enrolled female candidates appeared in the examination and 7,031 (54 per cent) of them were decaled passed.

According to statistics, 75 male and 532 female candidates got “A-1”; 359 male and 1,896 female candidates secured “A” grade; 430 male and 2,344 female candidates got “B” grade while 379 male and 1,855 female candidates got “C” grade.

Meanwhile, BIEK chairman Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai said here on Wednesday that as many as 19 colleges gave zero per cent results and another 17 showed below 10 per cent results in the examination.

He was taking to newsmen at a ceremony held at the BIEK conference room in the honour of the position-holders. He said the colleges showing below 10 per cent result in the previous annual examination had been issued notices asking them to improve their performance or risk disaffiliation from the board. “If the colleges are the same which had been served notices last year, then the board will have no choice but to suspend their affiliation,” he said.

About the board’s steps to prevent or curb the use fake answer scripts, he said that answer scripts with water marking and hidden marks, readable only through an electronic device, would be introduced from the academic year 2009.

Prof Zai stated that the pattern of examination papers would also be changed from the next annual examination.

“The new pattern envisages 50 per cent marks for objectives-type questions, 20 per cent for short answers and 30 per cent for descriptive questions,” he added.

He also announced that the board would award Rs500 per month to the top 20 students on the merit list for two consecutive years. Director-general (Colle-ges), Sindh, Prof Rafique Ahmed Siddiqui, BEIK controller of examinations Prof Agha Akber Mirza, toppers and their parents were also present.
