KARACHI, May 6: Two men died in road accidents in the city on Monday.
An unidentified taxi driver died when his taxi (PG-8771) collided with a passenger coach near the airport bridge.
The police said that the taxi driver, who was injured in the accident, was taken to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre by a student of Dow Medical College. The taxi driver died in the hospital.
The dead man remained unidentified as the police found no document either on his person or in the vehicle which could establish his identity.
The body has been kept in the Edhi’s morgue for identification.
One man died and another was injured in a road accident on ICI Bridge in TPX police limits in the early hours of Monday morning. The police said that a Suzuki pickup driver, Kabir Khan, aged 46, rammed his vehicle (KC-4477) into the rear of a water tanker (LHD-1513). Kabir Khan died on the spot, and his companion, identified as Sahar Alam, aged 16, was injured in the accident.
The police said that the victim might have been dozing in the early hours of morning when he hit the tanker.
Kabir’s body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem. Alam had been admitted to the hospital, the police said.
CARJACKING: Nineteen vehicles — seven cars and 12 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Monday, the police said.
Four cars were hijacked and three others stolen in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Saddar, and New Town police limits.
Six motorcycles were hijacked and six others stolen in Saddar, North Nazimabad, Ferozabad, and other police limits.
FIRE: The fire brigade rescued four persons from the third floor of Panorama Centre in Saddar, following a fire in electric meters in the basement of the building on Monday. Smoke reached the top floor of the building.
People trapped on the first and second floors escaped to the top floor. They came out of the building with the help of a snorkel.
A spokesman for the fire brigade said that the fire was caused by a possible short circuit in the electric wires in the basement.
After the fire broke out, the KESC disconnected the electricity supply to the building. Edhi ambulances and the police also helped with the rescue work.
The rescue work by the fire brigade caused traffic jams in the surrounding streets of Saddar during the peak evening rush hour. Zebunnisa Street and Abdullah Haroon Road were among the roads and streets where traffic jams occurred.
Three fire tenders and a snorkel were used in the fire-fighting operation.
A KESC spokesman said that the fire had broken out because of faulty wiring in the building and excessive load being used by the consumers.

The New Karachi police received information that suspicious people were hiding in a house in 5-D sector in New Karachi. They raided the place. However, the occupants of the house escaped.
