DHAKA, June 12: Former prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina Wajed left for London, en route to the USA and Canada, on Thursday morning, a day after her release from prison.

The military backed caretaker government of Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed released Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday afternoon for a period of eight weeks from June 11 for medical treatment abroad.

The government also returned her seized belongings, including her two Mercedes Benz vehicles, two mobile sets and a computer, following an order issued by a Dhaka court in this regard.

Late on Wednesday, Hasina had a telephonic dialogue with chief adviser of the caretaker government and reportedly request the latter ‘to create an atmosphere conducive to a free, fair and credible national election’.

Earlier, Hasina held a meeting of her party’s central working committee.
