KARACHI, May 20: The inaugural match of the 6th AKU Inter-university football tournament 2008, being organised by the AKU Sports and Rehabilitation Centre, saw hosts Aga Khan University (AKU) beat Greenwich University 2-0 at the AKU Ground here on Tuesday.

The match between the Group ‘D’ sides remained equal till the final moments of the first half with the hosts’ first goal coming in the 28th minute of the match when right fullback Saad, as a result of some fine tackling, kept possession of the ball before passing it just at the right instant to left-winger Jalaluddin who made no mistake in netting the ball from close quarters.

Greenwich’s goalkeeper Kashan Ahmed, who seemed to be the only player in that outfit defending AKU’s constant attacks, couldn’t do much to save the sure shot.

The second goal for AKU also came in the first half, in the 30th minute; a second before the whistle, when the medical students’ striker Kaleem Jan’s powerful shot from the far right side went directly into goalie Kashan’s hands but inches behind the goal line.

The 2-0 score at halftime remained unchanged throughout the second half although the game in both 30-minute halves continued mostly in Greenwich’s half with AKU on constant attack.

After watching the performance of both sides, match commissioner Wazir Ali commented that “It was really a one-sided affair where AKU should have scored more goals but they need to work more on their shooting”, a message there for the winning team’s coach Qamar Ali.

Twelve teams are competing in the tournament with the final slated for May 29.

Group ‘A’: Ziauddin Medical University vs Bahria University at 4.00pm.

Group ‘B’: Jinnah Medical & Dental College vs Dow University of Health Sciences at 5.00pm.
