LAHORE, April 30: District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood visited selected polling stations in the provincial metropolis on Tuesday and expressed satisfaction over the turnout.

The Nazim started visiting the polling stations after casting his vote at the Government Model Degree College near his Model Town residence at around 10.30 am. Forty to 70 votes had been cast at different booths by male voters.

The Nazim drove to a New Muslim Town polling station behind Sheikh Zayed Hospital after leaving Model Town. The average number of votes cast at polling booths was around 80 when the Nazim left for Gulberg at around 10.55 am.

At Liberty Market, Gulberg, the number of votes polled was 133 at 11am.

Trucks of Water and Sanitation Agency were offloading workers at the Crescent Model School, Shadman, when the Nazim reached there at around 11.30 am. The number of votes polled by the men at two polling booths was 50 and 26. The number of votes cast by women was only 6. The Wasa men had lined up at female polling booths.

At the LDA Complex, he was greeted by a large number of LDA employees who raised slogans in his favour and showed him their inked thumbs as a proof of having cast ‘yes’ vote.

The Nazim then drove to the Referendum Control Room at the District Courts at around 12 noon. Naib Nazim Farooq Amjad Mir told him that polling was proceeding smoothly everywhere.

He said that “brisk turnout” of voters was being reported in rural areas where presiding officers were asking for more voting slips.

At a polling station in Qila Lachhman Singh, the Nazim was greeted by his supporters and another batch of Wasa employees.

Being in constant touch with his supporters through his mobile phone, Mian Amer visited only those polling stations where he expected to find large crowds of voters. He did not stop at any polling camp set up by the UC Nazimeen which were mostly deserted.

Governor Khalid Maqbul was described as the future prime minister in some of the banners on display outside some polling stations.
