KARACHI, May 7: A 21-year-old man who had gone to his maternal uncle’s house in Khokhrapar to meet his girl cousin was shot dead on Wednesday when the inmates mistook him for a thief, family and police said.
Arsalan Naeem Khan had recently returned from Bahrain after doing his matric and was staying with his paternal cousin, Dr Akbar Nasir.
The police registered a murder case against Adeel Shaikh, the victim’s second cousin, on the complaint of Dr Nasir and arrested the suspect.
The family told the police that Arsalan slipped into the three-storey house (R-174) through a window to meet Rida, daughter of Salim Shaikh, at around 4.15am. They said Salim Shaikh woke up and took out his licensed pistol when he heard the window creak.
The family said Salim Shaikh went to the room of Adeel, his nephew, and told him about the presence of an intruder in the house.
They said they started looking for the intruder, who apparently hid himself in a cupboard. The family said Adeel took the pistol and peered into the cupboard. He opened fire the moment he felt that there was some movement inside the cupboard.
ASI Mehmood Alam of the investigation police told Dawn that Dr Akbar Nasir, who lived in the next lane in house R-294 also rushed to the spot after the incident.
Later, the victim was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where sources said the young man was brought dead.
They said the victim was shot to his head and the bullet stuck in the left side of his ribcage.
ASI Alam said the police had registered a murder case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code against the suspect though the victim was shot dead in what seems to be a case of mistaken identity.
The police officer said the body was kept at the Edhi morgue as the victim’s parents were expected to reach here from Bahrain shortly. He said the victim initially lived with his maternal uncle and had joined a college.
The police officer said the victim moved to his paternal cousin’s house after his aunt (Rida’s mother) objected to his relationship with her daughter.
Student crushed to death
A 21-year-old college student was killed after he fell from his motorcycle and was run over by a fast-moving bus in Korangi.
Witnesses said the young man was riding his bike very fast and lost control of the two-wheeler on Jam Sadiq Bridge. The body was shifted to the JPMC where the victim was identified as Behram Khan, son of Mohammed Iqbal.
Korangi police said the victim’s father, a transporter, pardoned the bus driver, who, however, had fled the scene after the accident. They said the driver remained unknown and the police have impounded the bus (JH-1099).
The police said that no case was registered against the unknown absconding driver as the victim’s father did want to lodge an FIR.
They said the young man was a resident of Naik Mohammed Goth in the limits of the Shah Latif Town police. The police quoted the victim’s father as saying that his son was reluctant to go to college in the morning. His father told the police that he had forced his son to attend the college.
