ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: President General Pervez Musharraf has said that the government and the people of Pakistan take great pleasure in joining the international community in celebrating the 56th anniversary of the United Nations.
In his message on the occasion of the 56th UN Day falling on October 24, the president said, the United Nations should be justifiably proud of its performance since its inception.
He said, the conferment of the 100th Nobel peace prize on secretary-general Kofi Annan and the United Nations earlier this month is indeed a recognition of the organization’s success in promoting peace and security in the world and providing humanitarian assistance to the needy.
“The tragic events of September 11 underscore the need for the international community to work together even more closely in addressing the complex challenges being faced by us today. On this UN Day, we need to reiterate our pledge to make this world a better place to live for all of us,” he said.
The president said he would like to take this opportunity to reiterate Pakistan’s abiding faith in the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
“We would continue to extend our wholehearted support and cooperation to the United Nations in its efforts for the realization of the noble objectives enshrined in the Charter,” he said. —APP
