SWABI, March 19: Opposition leader in Swabi District Council Ishfaq Khan has claimed that different union council nazims have contacted him for bringing a no-confidence motion against District Nazim Shahram Khan Tarakai.

However, he told Dawn, they had not yet taken a decision on the matter. The decision would be taken by the party leadership, said Mr Ishaq belonging to the Awami National Party.

“But one thing is very clear that we will ask the district government about the sources of funds and their use. The name of the executing agency and the name of the person who ran a particular programme should be unveiled,” he said.

“I have already moved an application in the Local Government Commission in this connection and the matter will now be pursued with full vigour.”

He said that under the National Rural Support Programme, the district government had received Rs160 million from the federal government and former federal minister Amir Muqam had told the district nazim that the amount could be used only according to his directives. “We will also ask about utilisation of Rs100 million each announced by President Pervez Musharraf provided and former prime minister Shaukat Aziz for the district,” he said. “Opposition members did not their share in the funds.”

When contacted, Mr Shahram said the district government had used the funds for the welfare of the people. “If Mr Ishfaq wants to know where the funds have gone then we also have the right to question how ANP leaders played with the people’s fate for 60 years while only raising the slogan of Pakhtun rights and doing nothing practical for their welfare. The district government initiated and completed numerous projects just in a few years,” the nazim said.
