KARACHI, March 13: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on Thursday called for a high-level inquiry into the death of a Pakistani in an Indian prison.

HRCP officials Zohra Yusuf and Iqbal Haider said in a statement that Khalid Mehmood had been tortured to death in Delhi’s suburban Gurgoen jail on Feb 12. But his body was handed over to his family at the Wagah border on March 10 after a lapse of almost a month.

They said it was regrettable that Mr Mehmood’s death was kept under wraps till the release of Kashmir Singh, an Indian national who had been in jail here for over three decades and was freed by the government, which was welcomed and appreciated by the people of the two countries.

They said the tragic death in custody of Khalid Mehmood negated the spirit of the recent Pakistan-India agreement on the establishment of a Judicial Committee on Prisoners.
