THATTA, Feb 26: Ms Kay Anske, consul general of the US consulate, expressed hope that the Pakistan People’s Party would make concrete efforts to eliminate the menace of terrorism and help the world community build a better world for tomorrow.

She called on PPP MPA-elect Sassui Palijo at her Makli residence on Tuesday and congratulated her on her election to a general seat. She, accompanied by Mr Tim O. Hall, political-cum-economic officer, arrived in Thatta to seek first hand knowledge of post-election scenario in the district.

Ms Sassui told the US diplomat that the district was important due to its strategic and geographical location but the Shirazi group who had ruled it for two decades had left it virtually in ruins.

She said that the group had usurped all the resources of the district and held the population hostage with the help of state machinery, which had been at their disposal.

She agreed to Ms Kay Anske’s suggestion that small and big industries should be set up in the district to help provide maximum opportunities to the jobless youth.

The MPA-elect urged revival of the projects of Keti Bundar mini port-cum fish harbour and 5,200 megawatt power projects, which had been introduced by the two Benazir governments, but later scraped by other governments. The projects, if revived, would bring unparalleled prosperity, help get rid of salinity and create job opportunities, she said.

She informed the delegation about rapid sea intrusion which had eaten away about 1.2 million acres of fertile land.
